Why is political independence important for local government candidates?

Being independent means a Councillor’s decisions are not influenced by the policies or directives of a political allegiance that they have represented or aspire to represent.

I am proud to be one of three members of the current Council who has not ever stood for election for a political party. I have never been a member of, or associated with any political party, nor do I aspire to be.
